Gender bias in press coverage – Milan Design Week

Dezeen is one of the most influential design online magazines, with over 1 million followers on Instagram and 2 million visits a month, it has been shaping the opinion of the design world for the past decade. Creating trends, pointing the emerging design “stars”, the magazine has responsibility to foster gender equality and refrain from bias. For a long while, I have had a feeling that materials featured on dezeen underrepresent female designers. This years Milan Design Week was a trigger to truly verify it.

I have followed dezeen Instagram account and their coverage of Milan Design Week for the past 48 hours. Gender bias seems to be systematic. Please see my visual analysis of their feed below.
